Urban Green Renovation with Bare Steel.

Downtown Phoenix Arizona property owner Norm Fox chose Bare Naked A606 (aka: COR-10™, Core Ten™, Rustic Metal or weathering steel) for his 2009 urban renovation of two bungalows located on 4th Street. “I wanted to bring back the historic and authentic look of downtown Phoenix. The bungalows are perfect for small business, but it is almost cost prohibitive to renovate them. I would like to see the city help small business renovate and repopulate the downtown area. I knew that if I renovated my property with the A606 others would follow. The bare A606 steel is reminiscent of the tin roofing originally used in 1908. I wanted steel that would be beautiful and sustainable.” Norm Fox.

Norm chose Architect Andy Pulsipher the protégé of the late Alfred Beadle for his expertise in metal and ability to work with the city of Phoenix. Andy states that he usually uses some kind of steel in his projects due to its versatility and life span. “I know this steel will last forever”. The heavy gauge A606 is perfect for his design that focused on “the adaptive use of steel” to renovate the two bungalows. The site is a work of art, using beams, grates and heavy plate to accent the deep cinnamon colored A606 corrugated roofing. “We wanted to keep the rafters open in the 905 building which had 2 x 4s with a 20’ span says Andy, which meant we had to restructure the entire roof. In order to get the city’s approval we brought in a structural engineer and we added steel supports and 2 x 6 firing to support the weight of the A606 roof. To ensure energy efficiency, I added 6” of spray foam insulation directly over the existing asphalt roof. The inside rafters are trimmed in the same corrugated A606 steel. The 901 the roofing was still intact and the steel was applied directly to the existing roof. “We basically took two inefficient buildings and made them efficient and beautiful”.

Currently 901 & 905 N. 4th Street spaces are available. Please drive by, Norm Fox’s phone number is on the sign and see if this is the perfect space for your business downtown.

Local artist Nathan Ward created the 16’ Buddha sculpture, outside wall sculpture, hand railing and exquisite outside patio bar. Pete Deise created the wall sculpture inside the 901 building that covers the back bar wall area.

Steel IQ, Inc. focuses on the environmental attributes of ASTM A606 (aka: COR-10™, core-ten™, rustic, exotic or weathered steel). It is our mission to educate on the significance of specifying the mill of origin for steel products. We market our brand of bare steel as Bare Naked Steel™, the A606 under the name COR-10™. We verify the “ore to door” environmental attributes of our steel. A local distributor of Bare Naked Steel™ provided the A606 steel specified by Andy Pulsipher.

The use of local talent, materials and the nation’s greenest steel makes this corner of downtown phoenix a masterpiece in metal.
