Gesamtkunstwerk-”total work of art” by Blank Studio, Matthew Trzebiatowski, AIA, LEED AP

Gesamtkunstwerk: “Total Work of Art” Xeros house by Matthew Trzebiatowski, AIA, and LEED AP.

I had the opportunity to interview Matthew Trzebiatowski, AIA, and owner and lead architect at Blank Studio in Phoenix Arizona. Matthew received numerous awards for his design. Blank Studio and Matthew enjoyed months of attention via home tours and the admiration of the architectural community.

However, all that attention has stopped. Once the housing crunch landed, Blank Studio like many other Architectural and creative thinkers fell into the pool of luxury ideology. Architecture is the foundation of building, and as we as a country focus on sustainable building, the architects should be our leaders. Energy efficiency, use of local and sustainable materials all begin with design.

I asked Matthew to describe to me who inspires him, the works of classic architecture by LeCorbusier, Miles Van Der Rohe and Sigurd Lewerentz and more recently, the work of Anish Kapoor and Olafur Eliasson are his Mentors. All of which had a futuristic-using steel and glass in an open form, less is more, and small space or use of space ingenuity that can be seen in Matthews work.

When I asked him about “green” design, he agreed with me that the ideology is good but the “checklist” system is skewed. Steel IQ, Inc. is frustrated that USGBC and LEED do not advocate for architects like Matthew who like his mentors inspire and lead the way for change and can be adapted to exceed energy efficiency. Instead, buzzwords fly, advertising, memberships and LEED accreditation seem to be the focus.

It is Steel IQ’s mission to advocate bare steel use in sustainable design, the architects, and designers. To educate them on the use of American made steel. Together we will see real innovation and lowered energy use.

The Xeros house is Matthew’s home and office, unrestrained by conventional client issues, Matthew built his dream home. I cannot help but sense that at some level he sought it to be his “mark” in his trade. The “sensual minimalism” as Matthew puts it is obvious. From the outside, the building has a futuristic look, very angular and square, the bare corrugated steel cold roll, oxidizes to a deep cinnamon color, requires no maintenance, and has a life span up to 80 years. This bare steel blends beautifully with the desert landscape and jagged rock hills of the Arizona desert.

Matthew left the facing West sidewall solid, to neutralize the Arizona sun’s heat. On the South, East and North sides light to showers in from all sides, with a heavy industrial mesh flowing from the roofline to the ground, offering a heat buffer, as well as texture. The long narrow bathroom window’s blue huge add unique contrasting color at night.

The house’s clean lines, open space, sensuous spiral staircase to upper living quarters are all made of materials left in their natural state give purpose to the design. Matthew stated that most construction is covered up-because their ugly, rough, and lacking artisanship.

Unlike his open design where the foundational concrete is left open-“authentic” as Matthew refers to it, one instinctually understands that it is the foundation, it is under ground and it is the “grounding point of the whole house. One cannot help but feel solid and comfortably “at home”, that coherent element is lacking in traditional building.

The natural look is one that many industrial designers like, leaving beams open ect. However, with the Xeros house half way up the wall is covered in plaster with a zero VOC finish of bee’s wax and honey-the warm glaze looking finish gives warmth to the bare walls that span the total height of the buildings insides. Finishes like this add texture without masking the natural plaster and the ability to connect with the hand-finished glaze does evoke a personal appreciation to the artisanship of the work.

The staircase is a central focal point, the shear size of it is impressive and the hot roll (an industrial structural metal) is detailed with the steel’s stamp of origin, the welders beading is again left for admiration.

Regardless, Blank Studio’s phone is not ringing off the hook with contract offers. This is disturbing to Steel IQ. How is it that when someone such as Matthew who understands the need for sustainable design, innovative materials and is intuitive enough to know that the “trend” should become the norm, and yet is an anomaly?

This is where Steel IQ, Inc. becomes an advocate, we see this kind of neglect as a violation of inspiration, the very thing sustainable-GREEN-industry is intended for.

Steel is by far our favorite building material and we seek out architects like Matthew to further our argument that America’s standards for building need to reach far beyond LEED and inspire an urban-back-to nature mentality. It is simple common sense, use sustainable, environmentally (actual location) sympathetic design and material to lower the gluttony America is now known for.

A Conversation with Alli ReauVeau, President of Steel IQ.Inc
Wednesday, 21 April 2010 07:09
Business: Steel IQ, Inc

Principals: Alli ReauVeau, President/Education Specialist

Location: Arizona, Ships Nationally

On the web: Steel IQ.com

Description of Business:
Steel IQ™, Inc., is the largest mill direct distributor of roofing grade 22GA, with the lowest carbon footprint in the USA.

Bare Naked Steel™ COR-10 A606 Type 4 & Cold Roll A1008 in the USA.

Why is Montana right for your business/product?
The topography and the rich culture of mountain living is ideal for Bare Naked Steel™. Steep slope roofs are usually metal and the rustic weathered steel blends well with the mountain providing an aesthetically pleasing option.

What was the last business book you have read?
Philosophy of sustainable design, by Jason McLennan. Attended his seminar in Boise Idaho hosted by the USGBC Idaho Chapter: Beyond LEED: The Living Building Challenge with Jason F. McLennan. We attend US GreenBuild Expo and SW GreenBuild Expo.

What technologies are important in the business?
How steel produced “ore to the door”!

Electric Arc Furnace Technology at the mill level. EAF‘s use 67% less coal and 40% less energy and 100% domestic metal scrap. This produces a greener product. The steel we provide is 70% recycled content and is made in the USA using the EAF.

What term best describes the company’s management philosophy and why?
Entrepreneurial, we are a small company that began servicing independent roll formers and once that option was exhausted, we began focusing on GreenBuild movement-which is more inline with our personal philosophy of product selection.

How do you define success?
Success is compensation, however our spirit of success lie in our personal investment into people and the Planet. We educate on green steel and advocate for the use of local contractors. Knowledge is power and using that knowledge to advance the health and wealth of all humans is what real success is.

In your current position, describe your proudest achievement?
We are proud to have formulated a business model that concentrates on “green”. We offer a wider variety of panels in the “Bare Naked Steel”, that cannot be run on the same machines as a painted product, saving them the investment in additional machinery.

We focus on co-creating with the local economy and provide an environmental option to a client’s already thriving business. We do not install so we directly support the roofing trades and builders in the area.

Describe the challenges you face?
Perception! Large manufacturers like Metal Sales, ASC and Fabral buy imported steel. It is cheap and has a huge negative impact on both the environment and economy. These large companies often have product lines that service the end user. This has a negative impact as both are competing for the same jobs.

We offer a green roofing product line with the best margin available for the local steel companies. More over, we are willing to sell the trim in slit coil form allowing the fabricators to create the trim on site, gaining higher margin and highlighting their craft. You will not find any one else willing to do that for the local companies.

We are committed to working with the local community not against it. However, some perceive as a threat to their market. This is simply narrow thinking. There is more power in collaboration than competition. We just have to educate!

Future growth and outlook:
The future is so bright we have to wear sunglasses as the song goes. We see green building and design as something that will define the century. The creativity that is driving this change is going to change the world. We are grateful to be a part of such a historical event.

Advice you would like to share?
Think “ore to the door”. We have spent 5 years directly working with steel mills. We have created Steel IQ™, Inc to not only distribute the Bare Naked Steel™ product line but also educate on the facts about steel. The global market and cheap steel imports threaten the USA’s manufacturing and building industry. We are focused on the big picture and the local markets that we can influence in a professional and progressive way.

Montana has many roll formers and roofing suppliers and we seek to advance their thinking. We can actually improve their business due to the margin we can offer.

From the perspective of the roofer, we offer a completely new product line, which they can now offer and gain business that was previously unavailable to them.

From the perspective of the designer’s-architects, we offer them an exotic metal that is gaining the admiration of both rustic and modern design.

From the perspective of the consumer, the historical significance of this product is breathing new life in to it. 100 years ago, this steel was as much a part of the landscape as the trees that have been replaced with ugly buildings that obstruct the beauty of Montana. The preservation of using bare steel and other local building products and talent is a noble a noble cause.

Steel must be chemically treated with by galvanization to accept the paint. The high-tech world of paint has dumped millions dollars into creating a rainbow of colors for steel fans. With those dollars, there are also millions of tons of toxic waste that many paint companies dump in the process of painting, especially overseas where there is no EPA to monitor its practices. Painted Steel will always have its place in the steel market, but the “green” market is NOT one of them.
Not all steel is created the same, substrate (the actual steel) can be produced worldwide and we are all well aware of the atrocious human and environmental violations that most off shore mills manufacture steel in. Under that colorful painted surface is most often a substrate produced in the worst of conditions. The paint it’s self can be just as nasty.
No matter what….Paint eventually peels off steel!
Steel it just is not made to be painted.
Bare Steel produced outside of the USA “substrate” and it is not green.
It is our mission at Steel IQ, Inc. to educate everyone from the BLM to the average homeowner what steel is all about. Steel in our opinion should look like steel not plastic. Bare Steel Naked Steel™ is the only domestic steel that certifies its “Green-Ore to the Door” philosophy.
Feel free to ponder the concept of “mill of origin”, it should be your first question to your builder, architect and designer…and if you must have painted steel demand a USA manufacturer like Valspar, again if you are not asking these questions you not doing your job as a consumer, LEED AP, AIA Architect or Green Builder.
We personally feel that steel is beautiful in it’s natural rustic cinnamon color. We realize our site promotes one kind of steel, Bare Naked Steel ™ and frankly we are experts in the how, where, when and green of this steel.
Why settle for a painted product based on the false belief that it will last forever…the color on that steel will peel off…maybe in 5 maybe in 25 years, but Bare Naked Steel™ will keep it’s luxurious cinnamon color forever and the life span of the steel is anywhere from 50 to 100 years. Bare Naked Steel is the same “chemical” twin as the steel that bridges are build of, so if they can last over 200 years, we think the warranty’s that claim that their paint will last for 40 years are just that…a warranty… a piece of paper! If you read the fine print, you will find…that the warranty does not transfer, is limited in various ways…and good luck finding a paint company that will not simply defer responsibility to the local Rollformer or roofer…whom cannot afford to replace a roof to keep their good name.
If you truly want to purchase responsibly and to support the USA as well as the local manufacturer and roofer in your area buy Bare Naked Steel™!

Downtown Phoenix Arizona property owner Norm Fox chose Bare Naked A606 (aka: COR-10™, Core Ten™, Rustic Metal or weathering steel) for his 2009 urban renovation of two bungalows located on 4th Street. “I wanted to bring back the historic and authentic look of downtown Phoenix. The bungalows are perfect for small business, but it is almost cost prohibitive to renovate them. I would like to see the city help small business renovate and repopulate the downtown area. I knew that if I renovated my property with the A606 others would follow. The bare A606 steel is reminiscent of the tin roofing originally used in 1908. I wanted steel that would be beautiful and sustainable.” Norm Fox.

Norm chose Architect Andy Pulsipher the protégé of the late Alfred Beadle for his expertise in metal and ability to work with the city of Phoenix. Andy states that he usually uses some kind of steel in his projects due to its versatility and life span. “I know this steel will last forever”. The heavy gauge A606 is perfect for his design that focused on “the adaptive use of steel” to renovate the two bungalows. The site is a work of art, using beams, grates and heavy plate to accent the deep cinnamon colored A606 corrugated roofing. “We wanted to keep the rafters open in the 905 building which had 2 x 4s with a 20’ span says Andy, which meant we had to restructure the entire roof. In order to get the city’s approval we brought in a structural engineer and we added steel supports and 2 x 6 firing to support the weight of the A606 roof. To ensure energy efficiency, I added 6” of spray foam insulation directly over the existing asphalt roof. The inside rafters are trimmed in the same corrugated A606 steel. The 901 the roofing was still intact and the steel was applied directly to the existing roof. “We basically took two inefficient buildings and made them efficient and beautiful”.

Currently 901 & 905 N. 4th Street spaces are available. Please drive by, Norm Fox’s phone number is on the sign and see if this is the perfect space for your business downtown.

Local artist Nathan Ward created the 16’ Buddha sculpture, outside wall sculpture, hand railing and exquisite outside patio bar. Pete Deise created the wall sculpture inside the 901 building that covers the back bar wall area.

Steel IQ, Inc. focuses on the environmental attributes of ASTM A606 (aka: COR-10™, core-ten™, rustic, exotic or weathered steel). It is our mission to educate on the significance of specifying the mill of origin for steel products. We market our brand of bare steel as Bare Naked Steel™, the A606 under the name COR-10™. We verify the “ore to door” environmental attributes of our steel. A local distributor of Bare Naked Steel™ provided the A606 steel specified by Andy Pulsipher.

The use of local talent, materials and the nation’s greenest steel makes this corner of downtown phoenix a masterpiece in metal.

901 & 905 N. 4th Street- seated in the heart of the Arts District of Phoenix, are home too two buildings that sport the Bare Naked™ corrugated steel roof and siding carried by Steel IQ, Inc. The weathered steel accents the architecture, lush foliage and artistic contributions of two local artists.
Building owner Norm Fox, architect Andy Pulsipher, general contractor Scott Fisher and two artists Nathan Ward and Pete Deise completed this architectural work of art in March of 2009.
Norm Fox said he chose the A606 because he “wanted to bring back the historic and authentic look of downtown Phoenix. That the area was founded in 1908 and back then the bungalows had tin roofs; the A606 gave the authentic look and the ambiance I was looking for”. Norm felt that by restoring two small houses that hopefully others would follow. Restoring the historic area and attracting more business.
Andy Pulsipher, the architect, a protégé of the late Alfred Beadle says he usually uses some form of steel in his work for it’s “permanence and versatility and enjoys the bare-naked steel when appropriate. That the A606 is ideal for historic preservation like 901 & 905”.
For this project, Andy concentrated on the “adaptive use of the steel”. In the 905 house, they wanted to keep the rafters open; the rafters are trimmed-out with the corrugated A606 as well. Therefore, they had to restructure the entire roof. The old 905 bungalow had 2x4s with a 20”span and that would not support the weight of the heavy gauge A606. They added steel supports and 2×6 firring. A structural engineer signed off on the restructure and the city approved it. As with all steel, insulation is the key to energy savings and comfort. Andy chose 6”spray foam insulation between the 2×6 and the corrugated profile’s creates a natural air pocket. 901 already had good insulation and we were able to re-roof the existing roof saving time and money. “Basically we took two inefficient houses and made them energy efficient and beautiful”. Says Andy
With any bare steel product, there is “staining” that appears around the perimeter of the building unless a gutter system is installed. The buildings have no gutter system, which was also deliberate. “We put pavers around the perimeter and wanted the staining to add to the vintage look. Around each rebar pole there is a small rust stain that is actually a great natural affect that adds to the charm”. Andy states.
One of the general contractors, Scott Fisher, owner of 21st Century Construction says working with the A606 was no different from any other metal, which de bunks the myth that A606 is difficult to work with. Scott is proud of the project.
When I brought up the significant environmental benefits of using a domestic A606, Norm, Scott and Andy said they were aware of the benefits of using steel but that “green” building was not their focus. They did not seek a LEED certification. The authenticity, nostalgia and life-span were the defining elements. The lack of a warranty did not concern them. Andy confirmed, “I know steel and this steel will last forever”.
Never the less, these two buildings are an environmental masterpiece. The steel is over 70% domestic recycled content, made & melted in the USA with an Electric Arc Furnace. The EAF uses 67% less coal and 40% less energy than the traditional Blast Oven Furnace. The mill of origin is an ANSI/ISO 14001; 2004 certified facility, and the nation’s largest recycler. The steel is maintenance free and will never need to be painted, sealed or power washed. This makes this renovation an architectural, environmental and historic work of art.
The two artists certainly contributed more than words can say, Nathan Ward is responsible for the massive Buddha, rebar canopy, railing and expansive swirling wall sculpture on 901. Nathan also used reclaimed grates to cover door & window. These textural elements set the stage for an industrial Zen experience.
Pete Deise was responsible for the interior sculpture inside the 901 building. The detail is proof that steel is the most gracious building material.
Please take time to drive by and checks out the architectural and artistic grandeur, both buildings are for lease…could this be your new downtown Phoenix location?

I spoke to Mike Beal of Beal Roofing and Remodeling about the Roofing Expo in New Orleans. Mike told Steel IQ (me) that the show was good he attended many different seminars but the one that stuck with him the most was the one he attended on social media. Sorry I didn’t ask him who taught the class.

Mike said he and others in the class were told “either get on the internet or your dead”…something like that. Mike says he took their advice and went home and made himself a Facebook page, Twitter Account and an Angie’s list profile. Mike isn’t loving the computer but he understands that times are changing.

Mike has made it a practice to be “on top” of roofing…pun intended. He can be found at most the trade shows. I met him at Metalcon 2009, he was there to look at the new Na Bocker Metal Roofing Tools and see what was new in the trade. He actually won the tools…says he loves them.

Mike won’t be the one spouting off some kind of long winded philosophy about why he is successful …he doesn’t have too. When you meet Mike you will be greeted with a calm kind of sincerity that is so rare to find. His confidence and ease assures you that Mike knows more than he ever lets on.

In just a few days of us running into him at Metalcon, sharing a few drinks and accidentally hijacking him and his brother Tony on the Valspar Boat, Steel IQ (Alan and I) made a friend. We made he and Tony late for dinner with another courting company but they took it all in stride and we had a good laugh. It’s been our joke ever since.

Unlike people I have worked for and with in the steel business for the last five years Mike doesn’t complain about the 4o plus people he keeps employed, economy, changes in the world. Mike is flat out goes to work.

Out of the thousands of companies that attended the Roofing Expo, no word or effort was wasted. Mike Beal will always have the latest and greatest tools, know the newest innovations and cohesively work that new knowledge into his many years in the roofing and remodeling business. That is what it takes to be “on top”!

We are so grateful for the support of open minded people, many of them new to social media that have engaged us in conversation, teaching us about their businesses and visions.

In times like this we need to be grateful for those who help, today and in the past and given us the opportunity to turn our talents into businesses.

It all starts with an idea, a few conversations and then magically we start caring about each other.

Today, I’d like to thank Mike Beal of Beal Roofing who services all of Ohio & the surrounding area. We met at Metalcon, shared some laughs and he taught us about the market we were looking to tap in to. The Roofing contractors. Mike has been my “go to guy” for questions regarding roofing installation, repair and he has graciously given his advise. Thank you Mike.

Give Mike a call at 513-967-7160…tell him you heard about him form Alli at Steel IQ.

Visit him on Facebook!

I get to rise and shine at 6:30am for an interview with http://www.blueplanetgreenliving.com/ it’s not everyday I get to talk to green gurus that just may put me to the test of everything I know. As an appetizer I want to just show some of the new photos I took this week around Phoenix. The creativity and workmanship in these steel projects have really taken my breath away. First of all the best award goes to Nine-05 Asian Modern restaurant it’s just amazing and I will do a full article on them when I can reach the architect and contractors that did the work.

905 Asian Modern is an amazing display of bare steel, artistic and eco friendly reclaimed materials. I can’t wait to show case them on Steel IQ. Stay tuned.

Second runner up is the Rio Salado Rest stop…municipalities have cost and maintenance in mind and their use of steel is truly unique it brings “fun” back into functional.

Third is a basic stucco house that junked the crappy composite roof and went for life long satisfaction. It just shows that steel goes with any kind of building.

Thats progress on three different sites…more to follow soon.

Read on….

Cor-10™. A1008

A1008 is less expensive because the copper in Cor-10™ is expensive. So it gets the $ benefit.
A1008 is browner not as deep a red as Cor-10™ so that is a matter of aesthetic preference.
A1008 will not rust as uniformly as Cor-10™ That may actually add to the beauty, again a matter of aesthetic preference.

Cor-10™is a “cold roll” product it just has copper in it. That copper reduces pitting. Copper is expensive.
Cor-10™ rusts more evenly and has a deep red cinnamon color. This is due to the copper content; copper distributes heat more uniformly and thus the moisture that oxidizes reacts more consistently.
Cor-10™ is the premium…it is the best in rustic steel.

Life-span

Both A1008 and Cor-10™ are life time roofing products, as long as the gauge is 22 or less (lower number means thicker gauge). The copper in Cor-10™ add 10-20 years to the life of the roof because copper helps prevent pitting. However, any heavy gauge roof is not going to pit for many many years…maybe over 80 years. Let’s do our part to make sure the Earth is still inhabitable before we quibble about having roofs that last 200 years.

Many industrial projects use heavy plate and it is anyone’s guess whether that is really A1008 or A606. Heavy plate is what our bridges are made of; the life span is ….well for as long as we humans are still around to care. Often the only way to tell the difference is the color and the cost.

Heat

Cor-10™ & A1008 are HOT. Yep in the hot sun both will get very hot. This is not to discourage anyone from using it. Arizona has some of the most beautiful steel structures. (See bus station photo at Fashion Square Mall, Scottsdale AZ.) Use common sense! The heat is a benefit in cold climates and a good insulation prevents the transference of heat to the living area. Use a really good insulation! Any metal roof must be insulated Cool Roof paint will not stop heat or cold if it is not insulated properly.

Painted vs. Bare?

Cool Color paint system…cool or not? Cool Color technology is really common sense but not rocket science. Lighter colors are naturally more solar reflective. If you have a white car or a black car, which is warmer when you leave it in a parking lot on a hot day? The black one right, in reality both are too hot to sit in so the benefit of a “technologically advanced” paint system is only important if you just insist on a certain color (black, blue, green, brown ect.) roof.

This is a matter of aesthetics, not energy in our opinion. We are so fed up with the hype that one can paint something “green” and it is green. It is the process of painting steel that is “un-green” not the color or the benefits. We know a fair amount about pigments and the process of painting steel, and there are some very responsible chemical companies that paint steel. But it is still a process that is toxic. Think of words like galvanization, polychromic dye, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, zinc oxide and a whole litany of solvents, adhesives, plastics, resins and the list of chemicals go on and on.

Why bother? Why not just go to bare beautiful natural steel?

•	It is our stand that a painted product is less green because of the painting process.
•	That the solar reflectivity does not add enough benefit to justify the immense toxic waste that chemical companies create.

So there! Bare is better! Bare Naked Steel™ is better yet…see the green check list!

Steel IQ, Inc. www.steeliq.com is always happy to educate anyone on the difference between the weathering steel known as Core-Ten and our Bare Naked Steel™ Cor-10™. Core-Ten is a trade name owned by US Steel. The brand name of Core-Ten is really used indiscriminately for any cold roll (ASTM A-1008) product that has the 5% copper content (ASTM A606).

That 5% copper content is the key to a uniform rusted finish-giving the steel surface a nice cinnamon color, making the A606 far more popular A1008 Cold roll.

What is not known about Core-Ten by any other name is that 99% comes form India or China. Without proof of the mill of origin one would not be able to tell the difference between a domestic product from the other “bad steel”.

Hence Steel IQ decided to launch the truth about this exotic steel, it’s green features and hopefully educate the consumer on what they are getting when they ask for Core-Ten. Not all A606 is created the same.

Here are 3 of the main differences and the key to making a better choice in steel.

Steel IQ’s Bare Naked Steel™ Cor-10™ defines it’s self by three main key factors…

70% Recycled Content-highest of any steel product in use today. 8.6% Pre Consumer and 57.8% Post Consumer which equals a combined recycled content of 70 to 72%. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel

Domestic Scrap Content-meaning the scrap is collected from US scrap yards, not bought off shore. Made in the USA. This is the difference between other products that may claim made in American when really the billet is barged over from China or India and simply smelted and rolled here in the states. Our steel is made from domestic scrap, smelted in the US employing US workers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrap

Electric Arc Furnace Technology. The EAF uses 67% less coal and is a cleaner-greener technology to produce steel. The mill of origin uses EAF technology exclusively. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_arc_furnace

Bare Naked Steel™ Cor-10™ is carving out a nice niche as designers and Architects push green design. We scream from the roof tops…”It is not enough to just use a weathering steel”. Everyone should take steel purchasing seriously because it effects every sector of the building industry.

Our steel is LEED compatible with credits:

MR 4.1/4.2 Recycled Content

MR 2.1/2.2 Construction Waste Management (scrap is 100% recycled)

MR 5.2/5.2 Regional materials (we have distributors all over the USA and meeting this credit is not a problem)

Our Manufacturing certification is backed up by the mill of origin, based on the exact heat that a steel was made.

John Sheridan owner of Sheridan Construction hangs perilously from a roof top. He is based out of Reading PA. He spoke to Steel IQ, Inc. today about the future of Exotic Metals. Mr. Sheridan’s company serves the greater Philadelphia area and specializes in exotic architectural metals for upscale residences and institutional and historic building . I wanted to feature Mr. Sheridan in our blog out of respect for his high Steel IQ! (pun intended see photo).

I found an article on the NRGCA website written in 2008 by Mark Ward Sr. that features Sheridan too. The article is about zinc gutter systems and how zinc was affecting the steel market in 2008. Sheridan states that not much has changed in the 2 years since the articles release. The article is a good read about both Zinc and Copper gutter systems but I wanted to know what Sheridan thought about a bare product like our Cor-10™ and what gutter system works best with the A606 in general.
Sheridan states bare products like our Cor-10™ react well with copper but poorly with Zinc. That there is a galvanic reaction between the A606 and the zinc, which causes damage to each and should not be used together. Sheridan goes on to state that many people have concerns about copper gutter systems and A606 due to the fear of the lead or other chemical runoff. Sheridan recommends a new product called Copper Plus for our Cor-10™.

Copper Plus is a Copper Clad Stainless Steel gutter system that is ideal for those who have environmental concerns and compliments the Cor-10™.

So I asked Sheridan which of the exotic metals is king on the east coast. Sheridan says copper for sure and that the A606 just has not reached his area yet. However, he knows his friend in Wyoming is using a lot of A606.

This is good news for Steel IQ. We are going to follow up with Mr. Sheridan again after we send him some samples of our steel. If we are lucky, Sheridan Construction will share the Steel IQ vision and start considering Cor-10™ for future projects.

Read A to Zinc Article here: http://www.nrgca.org/news.php?id=32

I don’t dare admit how little I know about roofing tools but it doesn’t take much to get lathered up about them. I got lucky with my friends at NABOCKER tool company. Once I began looking at all the different roofing tools I realized the real sexy part is the creativity and craftsmanship that roofers can now offer in a timely fashion. One of the newest tools is the wuko mini bender. This tool creates a 90 degree angle and due to it’s portability this is a steel roofer’s best friend. See the videos of how to use this tool here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S96U502WI9U

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yf0MP48lVqE&feature=youtube_gdata

To see all NABocker videos on cranes, lifts, and portable machines look here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/nabocker2008

It’s just not enough to have been in business for a long time or have the good ol’boy network. The creativity and imagination of designers and architects busting on to the market it is essential for all steel roofing companies to have the latest and greatest tools on the market.

Here at Steel IQ, Inc we do our best to search out not only the designers but the tools and roofing companies that have the talent to do the work.

Making those dreams as green as possible is Steel IQ’s business!

Let me know your thoughts and ideas on this blog, if you contact NABOCKER tell them Steel IQ sent you!

I just read this article from the Rollingstone.com the comments go flying as fossil fuel gurus bash “greenies”. It is getting hot under the collar as big polluters are threatened by mild mannered legislation (at best) advocating clean change. As a so called “greenie” I have to be alarmed that such hostility is so rampant. No one who stands to loose millions of dollars is going to be calm, I realize that, but its the pure viciousness that alarms me. How can you be offended by the notion to clean up our act? Why is that so alarming? It will actually benefit everyone! Is the bit of expense so hard to swallow when the millions of dollars paid to lobby against this change could actually be put to better use….um like cleaning up after yourself?

“But Buffett, whose investments have the power to move entire markets, is doing far more than bad-mouthing climate legislation — he’s literally banking on its failure.” Tim Dickson

The post from Oilguy goes like this “Heres some cold hard truth. Our entire civilization is built on cheap fossil fuels. And its gonna stay that way unless you want to go back to the dark ages. The hydrocarbons are there its just a matter of getting the greenies out of the way to drill for them (see T-Ridge project).”

The steel business is not innocent, coal and oil are big players in steel manufacturing, but alot can be done to clean it up…not kill it. Not remove it. Just clean it up.

It’s common scents to me.

Have a comment? Tell us…www.steeliq.com

Are you a Steel Creaton?

I affectionately address anyone who buys Steel from Korea or China as a Creaton. (Creaton: A person who is a total idiot. www.urbandicitonary.com)

Korea & China are pumping out steel faster than their people working in the mines can die. The toxic waste and threat to our economy is serious. If you are buying steel from a service center and do not know what mill your steel comes from….but love that super cheap price….you might be a Creaton. If you are a Creaton you are contributing to the demise of American jobs, our history of manufacturing, our economy and of course our Planet.

This guy has no choice…YOU DO!

Most steel is not made in the North Korea (the really bad entity to support…think Nuclear Weapons) but South Korea is just a stone’s throw away and not exactly worried about the Planet nor the quality of the steel.

China is kicking our economy in the A**. Really!!!!

Here is your Steel IQ lesson of the day. Make sure your supplier will provide you with a MTR (metallurgic test report) that will state the mill of origin. However if the information is not printed in English you won’t be able to tell if it’s China,Taiwan, Japan or any other country.

So how do you stop such a disaster? How do you make sure your NOT a Creaton?

A: Learn to read every Asian language.

B: Call Steel IQ and we will tell you where your steel is being made (cuz we know that stuff).

C. Have Steel IQ procure your steel, we can meet that price…really we can.

We can certainly help you….don’t be a Creaton! Call or Email us today!:
